Hoorn is a beautiful green city thanks to the many trees, parks and canals. Not only beautiful to look at but also very handy. In the summer the many trees provide cooling and when it rains you can take shelter underneath. In spring and summer Hoorn is greenest, but in autumn other beautiful colors emerge. The perfect place for a green city walk!
City of the lime tree
Hoorn is also the city of the linden tree / lime tree, a historic tree that you will encounter in many places in Hoorn. There are several species of linden trees, of which the led linden tree is the most famous. Branches in this tree are bent horizontally and attached to a frame. In subsequent years, the shoots on the trunk and shoots that grow in the wrong direction are pruned. In this way, a dense foliage is created that provides cooling in the house, especially in the summer. A very handy and natural awning ๐
Oldest tree in the Netherlands
The linden tree is also the oldest tree in the Netherlands. The thickest linden tree in the Netherlands has a pedigree of 790 cm! This tree is probably more than 400 years old. In history, the linden tree is seen as a sacred tree; the spirit Freya, who is said to have established it, was the protector of houses and churches. A branch would also help as a remedy for toothache and was also used in amulet form as a protection against black magic and spirits. The linden tree is also often sung and refers to past love. The linden tree is also found in many city coats of arms including those of Opmeer, Stede Broec and Noorder-Koggeland, in short a tree with a story, which can be fully admired in the beautiful Hoorn.
